Turbocharger Installation and Start-up Procedure

Installers should observe the following precautions to ensure a successful turbocharger replacement.

1) To ensure the integrity of the engine lubricating system including the lubricating oil pump and the state of the entire engine, ensure that all passages and pipelines are unobstructed so that they can generate and maintain the required lubricating oil flow and pressure.

2) Make sure that the lubricating oil inlet oil supply line and the outlet oil drain line are clean and properly arranged.

a. The arrangement of the lubricating oil inlet and outlet pipelines should minimize the heat transmitted from the engine exhaust pipe and other high temperature heat sources.

b. When the lubricating oil inlet pipe is blocked by carbon deposits, replace it.

c. If a hose is used, make sure that the tube is not hardened, folded, and its lining is not damaged or peeled.

d. If metal tubing is used, ensure that the tubing is not throttled or folded.

e. Some lubricating oil inlet hoses have reusable fittings, which allow the hose to be swapped without changing the fitting. To verify that the fittings are installed correctly, lining fragments of the hose cannot be left in the tubing assembly.

3) When using liquid-formed gaskets and sealing strips at the lubricating oil inlet and outlet of the turbocharger, such a problem has been found: when the joints are tightened, the gaskets and sealing strips are squeezed. be squeezed into the oil passages of the lubricating oil. When this material enters the lubricating oil inlet, the lubricating oil flow to one or more bearings will be blocked or cut off, and the oil flow and pressure will force the material into the bearing, causing abnormal bearing wear. At the lubricating oil outlet of the intermediate casing, due to the increase of sediment, it is enough to form a throttling phenomenon of lubricating oil at the outlet.

4) When pre-lubricating the turbocharger, be careful not to flood the turbocharger with lubricating oil.

5) Purge air from the open lube oil supply line. Remove the lubricating oil drain pipe from the turbocharger. At this time, crank the crankshaft without starting the engine until the lubricating oil flows out of the middle case oil outlet. If lubricating oil continuously flows out of the oil discharge pipe, it indicates that air bubbles have been discharged from the lubricating oil system. Use the funnel to pour the lubricating oil back into the drain line. 6. Make sure that the lubricating oil is clean and at the level of oil required for normal operation. If possible, the oil filter should be filled with clean oil to reduce the time it takes to start the engine.
